ABOUT US
The Burkina Faso Maritime Authority (BFMA) is a regulatory and supervisory body within the Ministry of Transport, established to ensure the safe and lawful use of the international waters and other water bodies.
OUR HISTORY
The Burkina Faso Maritime Authority was created in 2022 and became a legal entity with the enactment of the Merchant Shipping (Amendment) Act, 2024 and was transformed into the Burkina Faso Maritime Safety Authority on April 1, 2025.
OUR OBJECTIVE
Our primary objective is to ensure that all mariners, without exception, use and enjoy the international water bodies in a safe and lawful manner. We are also responsible for ensuring maritime security and pollution prevention.
OUR ROLE
As the focal point of contact for Burkina Faso with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), we have an international obligation to implement all the provisions of the IMO instruments that Burkina Faso has ratified, acceded to, or is a party to.

We are committed to providing a safe and secure maritime environment for all users of the international waters. We strive to achieve this through effective regulation, supervision, and enforcement of maritime safety and security standards.
